It’s no secret that I’ve become a bit of a PCMR snob lately. I like gaming on PC, I like tinkering with PC bits, and I like it even more when I can tinker with someone else’s bits (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I therefore did not hesitate one second when Ymir asked me to help him build a new PC for him, because his laptop kept blue screening.
The screen “YOU DIED” he and I both love, the blue screen of death though… not so much. He was on a budget, so that made the challenge even more fun to me. Even though I’m the only non-archaeologist of our bright bunch, digging for PC parts on a budget is something I can do just fine, so I went at it. I suggested X build, Y build, Z build, then back to X build, Y build again, but with tweaks… It took some time before the parts list was finally compiled and ready to order. We Skyped, we ordered, and then the waiting began.
The screen arrived first, the rest of the parts shortly after. We took Ragnar (our trusty Volvo) to pick up the ginormous boxes, picked up some Domino’s (can’t build on an empty stomach) and got to work. Excitement built up! This is amazing! Aaaaand it’s gone… The motherboard we got turned out to be a used one, filled with dust around the GPU and CPU sockets, clearly a fan had been blowing there already. Rats. Returned to sender, and wait yet another week. The new motherboard arrived, this time a brand spanking new one!
I told Ymir we’d be building it together, but of course he would be the one actually doing the work with me sitting next to him to guide him through the process. That way he’d learn something, be better at troubleshooting in the future and enjoy the fruit of his own labor! After a couple of hours of building, the bulk of which was the ever important cable management for that sweet clean look, it was finally done! The moment of truth was there, time to press the power button to see if it would post… QUEST COMPLETED! We installed Windows, drivers, aaaand done! We dropped him off at his place with all his new goodies, and a little later I got the following message:
Those are the words of a VERY happy gamer, and someone who sure as hell is better at League than me :3 I’ll let the pictures of our little adventure do the rest of the talking, and of course, for the interested, below you can also find the spec list of his build. I wish our bearded brother a lot of happiness with his new baby, may his frames be high and his temperatures low!
